Fall Author Series Installment with the Children's Inn at NIH with Butterfly Books

Updated: Jan 31

At The Next Gen Hope, we believe that hope, creativity, and compassion can be some of the most powerful tools for healing—especially for young people navigating serious health challenges. That belief came to life during a recent visit to the Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where our team had the honor of spending a heartwarming afternoon with a group of brave and inspiring children facing chronic and life-threatening illnesses.

In partnership with Butterfly Books, a fellow nonprofit dedicated to spreading the joy of reading, we hosted a special literacy and arts day for the kids. Butterfly Books generously donated new books for each child to take home, helping to spark imagination and offer a comforting escape through the pages of stories. We read aloud to the children, bringing characters and adventures to life in a way that not only entertained but also connected us all through shared moments of joy and reflection.

Beyond storytelling, The Next Gen Hope led a hands-on arts and crafts activity designed to encourage self-expression and creativity. With crayons, paper, stickers, and colorful materials, the children created their own artwork, letting their personalities shine in every piece. The room buzzed with laughter, curiosity, and connection as we helped the kids bring their ideas to life. Whether they were painting, journaling, or simply listening and smiling along, each child had the opportunity to just be a kid—something often taken for granted during hospital stays and treatment journeys.

This event was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do. By creating spaces where children feel seen, supported, and empowered to express themselves, we aim to plant seeds of hope that last far beyond a single afternoon. We are deeply grateful to the staff at the Children’s Inn, our partners at Butterfly Books, and—most of all—the incredible kids who reminded us of the power of resilience, joy, and human connection.
